Audio Solutions Question of the Week: When would I use one of the ATM350a Universal Clip-On Mounting Systems (ATM350U or ATM350UL)?

Question: When would I use one of the ATM350a Universal Clip-On Mounting Systems (ATM350U or ATM350UL)?

Answer: The ATM350a cardioid condenser microphone provides a crisp, clear, well-balanced response from any instrument. The microphone’s cardioid polar pattern protects against feedback by reducing side and rear pickup, while the switchable 80 Hz high-pass filter on the in-line power module helps control undesired ambient noise. Its capacity for handling extreme sound pressure levels up to 159 dB SPL allows it thrive when used in the most demanding high-volume applications.

The ATM350a comes in six, specially designed systems that provide discreet, rock-solid mounting solutions for a host of instruments. Today we will talk about the ATM350U and ATM350UL Universal Clip-On Mounting Systems, which are the most versatile of the UniMount® systems. Strong but flexible goosenecks, available in 5" and 9" lengths, are included with these universal mounting systems. These rugged goosenecks rigidly hold their shape, keeping the microphone accurately positioned even during aggressive play. (The mount and goosenecks are also available as separate component systems: AT8492U and AT8492UL.)

ATM350a Instrument Microphone System Roundup

ATM350U

The gooseneck’s octagon-shaped base slips into a socket on each mount, allowing the gooseneck to be oriented in a wide variety of positions. A captive, locking thumbscrew in the mount secures the gooseneck, but allows it to be quickly detached for storage or transport, without having to remove the mount from the instrument. The jaws of the mount open to ½ inch and are rubber-padded to protect the instrument. The mount also includes a locking screw to securely attach the jaws to a variety of instruments.

As the word “universal” implies, the ATM350U or the ATM350UL may be used to mic a variety of instruments. If there is a place to clip the mount, you can use this microphone for excellent sound reproduction.

  • For brass, percussion, and general-purpose applications, the ATM350U’s universal clip-on mount with 5" gooseneck attaches securely to the instrument’s bell or tailpiece, providing excellent shock resistance for the microphone. The captive, locking thumbscrew keeps the mount in place, while the soft rubber pads help protect the instrument’s surface.

  • The mount included with the ATM350U (5" gooseneck) or the ATM350UL (9" gooseneck) system attaches securely to the bridge or tailpiece of an upright bass or cello, providing excellent shock resistance for the microphone, while allowing the microphone to be positioned near the F-hole “sweet spot” for excellent sound reproduction.

  • The ATM350U’s mount attaches securely to the tailpiece of a violin or viola, providing excellent shock resistance for the microphone, while allowing the microphone to be positioned near the F-hole “sweet spot” for excellent sound reproduction.

  • The ATM350U’s or ATM350UL’s mount attaches securely to the pot assembly of a banjo, providing excellent shock resistance for the microphone, while allowing the microphone to be positioned to pick up the desired sound.

If you have further questions on setting up or operating your ATM350U or ATM350UL, feel free to contact the Audio Solutions Department for assistance.
